Guide · Getting advice

When might you not need a financial adviser?

Financial advice can be valuable, but it is not automatically the right purchase for every financial question.

The decision may be straightforward

If the problem is simple, the options are clear and you are comfortable taking responsibility for the decision, paid advice may add less value.

Free guidance may answer the question

MoneyHelper and other official services can provide free information and guidance. That may be enough when you need help understanding terminology or options rather than a personal recommendation.

The fee may be disproportionate

At lower asset levels, minimum annual fees can make an ongoing advice service expensive relative to the amount being managed. Compare one-off help, ongoing advice and doing it yourself.

You can still change your mind later

Choosing not to take advice now does not mean never using an adviser. A later retirement, inheritance, business or family decision may create a stronger reason.
