Questions to ask a financial adviser
The goal of a first meeting is not to be impressed. It is to find out whether the adviser’s scope, service and price fit what you need.
01
Regulation and scope
How are you authorised to give me advice?Cross-check the answer with the FCA register.
Are you independent or restricted? If restricted, ask what the restriction actually covers.
Are you an appointed representative? If so, understand which principal firm is responsible.
02
Client fit and specialism
What type of clients are your best fit?Listen for a specific answer rather than “everyone”.
How often do you advise on my type of problem?Retirement, business owners, inheritance, protection and other areas may need different experience.
What is your minimum client size?Check this before spending time on a longer fact-find.
03
Fees
What will I pay in year one?Ask for pounds, not only percentages.
What will I normally pay each year after that?Separate ongoing advice from platform and investment costs.
Is the fee tiered, capped or negotiable?Understand how it changes if your assets change.
04
Ongoing service
What happens between annual reviews?Clarify the actual recurring work.
Who will I deal with day to day?The person you meet initially may not be your main contact.
What happens if I no longer want ongoing advice?Understand the practical exit process and any implications.
