Can I stop paying ongoing financial adviser fees?

An ongoing advice arrangement should not be treated as permanent by default. Understand what you are cancelling and what responsibilities return to you.

Check your service agreement first

The practical process depends on the agreement you signed and how adviser charging is collected. Ask the firm to explain how to end the ongoing service and when charges stop.

What happens after ongoing advice stops?

Your investments or pension do not necessarily disappear because the advice service ends. However, you may become responsible for monitoring the plan, making future decisions and dealing directly with providers or platforms.

Questions to ask before cancelling

When does the fee stop?Get the effective date in writing.
What service ends?Understand reviews, adviser access and investment oversight that will no longer be provided.
Can the assets stay where they are?Ask whether any product or platform arrangement changes if advice ends.
What records should I keep?Retain key advice and investment documents for future reference.

Changing service can be an alternative

If the issue is price rather than the adviser relationship, ask whether a narrower or one-off service exists. You can also compare another adviser before deciding to move.
